Marginal Plants are planted around the edge of the pond, usually on a shelf within the pond to offer shelter and encourage wildlife.  These plants will give your pond height, colour and a more natural shape. Most ponds will have a shelf around the edge up to 30cm deep, and wide enough to enable you to place plants in Finofil pots, which will let the water flow through without losing any of the soil in the pot.  Most marginal plants grow from spring to late autumn when they will naturally die back.
