Clear water in wildlife ponds comes from balance and patience, not chemical treatments. New ponds often pass through temporary phases where the water becomes greener or algae appears. Established ponds can do the same during seasonal change. Warm, sunny weather increases light and temperature, while periods of heavy rain can briefly alter water chemistry. These fluctuations are a normal part of a pond settling in.

What to Do When Algae or Blanketweed Appears
Algae is a natural part of a healthy pond ecosystem and doesn’t mean something is “wrong”. Blanketweed commonly appears in young ponds or during weather extremes, then gradually reduces as plants become more competitive and nutrients are used more efficiently.
If blanketweed becomes excessive, it’s fine to gently remove some by hand. Always leave it at the pond edge for at least 24 hours, so insects, larvae and other pond life can crawl back into the water. Avoid removing all algae at once, as it still plays a role in the pond’s ecology and forms part of the food chain for many small pond-dwelling creatures.
Natural treatments such as barley straw can help reduce algae growth gradually without harming wildlife. Strong water movement and chemical treatments should be avoided, as amphibians prefer still water and tend to breed away from disturbance. With good planting and a light-touch approach, most wildlife ponds settle into a clear, balanced state over time.
Letting Wildlife Arrive Naturally
It can be tempting to introduce wildlife, but healthy ponds are quickly discovered on their own. Frogs, toads and newts are excellent at locating suitable breeding sites. Common frogs and toads are protected against sale under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, so you won’t find them, or their spawn, sold legally. Moving spawn between ponds is also best avoided. Conservation bodies discourage it because it can spread disease and invasive species and disturb local populations. Wildlife ponds don’t need to be large. Container ponds, even those partially sunk into the ground, can provide water and shelter in patios, courtyards and small gardens. Larger dug ponds allow for greater planting diversity, but the principles remain the same. Planting density and habitat quality matter far more than size.
