Which waterlilies are best for UK ponds?

All our waterlilies are hardy and suitable for UK ponds - the main thing is choosing the right size and style for your space. Miniature and small varieties are perfect for container ponds and small wildlife ponds, while medium and large waterlilies suit bigger garden ponds, natural swimming ponds or lakes.

Only one species, Nymphaea alba, is truly UK native, but it has a large spread and is only suitable for large lakes or ponds. For most ponds, hardy cultivated varieties are a better option as they provide the same shade and coverage without overwhelming smaller ponds and they tend to flower more reliably.

Waterlilies play a key role in pond health: their floating leaves provide shade, reduce algae growth and help keep water cooler in summer. As a guide, we recommend aiming for around two-thirds surface cover during the summer months to support clearer water and a balanced ecosystem. Waterlilies contribute significantly to this, especially when combined with deep-water plants and floating plants.

Of course, many people choose waterlilies for their beautiful blooms, and with over 40 hardy varieties to choose from, there’s a colour and size to suit every pond, from classic whites and yellows to vibrant pinks, reds and bicolours. If you need help choosing, just ask!
