How do oxygenating plants help keep pond water clear?
Oxygenating plants are one of the easiest ways to keep pond water clear. They release oxygen into the water and soak up the extra nutrients that algae would otherwise feed on - so they naturally help prevent green water and keep your pond healthier. It’s why we always recommend them, no matter the size or style of pond.
Because they grow underwater, they work quietly in the background: improving water quality, reducing stagnation and helping to keep things balanced without chemicals or pumps. They also double up as brilliant habitat , their dense foliage gives tadpoles, larvae and small aquatic insects a place to shelter and offer resting spots for amphibians and fish.
Native UK oxygenators like Hornwort are available for much of the year and are wonderfully low-maintenance. Others, such as Water Crowfoot, will even produce small flowers above the surface, while plants like Starwort are a favourite choice for newts when laying eggs. Having a mix of species is ideal, as different oxygenators peak at different times through the season.
Our oxygenating pond plants are available bunched, loose or pre-potted, depending on the variety. If you’re unsure which to choose, check the individual product pages or our pond planting guide - it’s easier than you might think to get the right balance.
