Marginal Plants for Garden Ponds

Grown on the shallow shelves around your pond, marginal plants soften and hide bare liners, frame the shape of the pond and bring colour and structure to the water's edge.

They also give frogs, newts and other wildlife safe cover for getting in and out of the water.

Depths vary from plant to plant, so always check each one before it goes in the pond. You can raise a plant nearer the surface with a brick or an upturned pot.

Young 1ltr plants do best started at their most shallow point, just under the waterline, then left to settle in and adjust slowly.

Marginals are where much of a pond's wildlife value sits. Mixing a few varieties with different heights and flowering times gives you a longer season of colour, plus steady cover and nectar for frogs, newts, dragonflies and pollinators through the year.
