How do I choose the right waterlily for my garden pond?
Choosing the right waterlily is mainly about understanding your pond, rather than choosing by colour. Start by looking at the surface area of your pond, as waterlilies are selected by their eventual spread, not by flower size.
In most UK garden ponds, the aim is to cover around 65–75% of the water surface once the plants are fully grown. This level of coverage helps shade the water, reduce algae and create a healthier environment for fish and wildlife. As a simple guide, allow one medium waterlily for every 2 to 2.5 square metres of pond surface, so an 8 square metre pond would typically suit around 3 waterlilies.
Depth is just as important as surface area. Most garden pond waterlilies grow best when planted at around 60–75cm deep. If your pond is deeper than this, it’s usually better to raise the plant on bricks or upturned pots rather than choosing a larger, more vigorous variety. Once size and depth are correct, colour becomes a personal choice. You can mix flower and leaf colours for interest, or stick to white varieties for a classic, natural look.
Waterlilies need a still, sunny pond, ideally with morning and early afternoon sun and they will struggle to flower in heavy shade or where there is constant water movement from fountains or waterfalls.
For quicker surface coverage, waterlilies can be combined with other deep-water plants such as Water Hawthorn for early-season growth, along with floating plants to add instant shade while waterlilies establish.
It’s worth noting that the only native UK waterlily, Nymphaea alba, is a very vigorous, large-spreading plant that is generally unsuitable for the average garden pond and is better reserved for large natural ponds or wetland areas. There are many UK-hardy alternatives that flower more reliably and are far better suited to garden ponds.
If you have a small pond or container pond, compact or pygmy waterlilies are a better choice, while larger ponds may require wider-spreading varieties. If you’re unsure which waterlily is right for your pond, we’re always happy to offer advice.
